I was born in Trinidad and raised in New York City. I attended Pratt Institute for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. My visual vocabulary blends the fantastic tropical, Earth's diverse natural splendor, and universal wonder along with the raw realities of globalism. The work explores travel and interconnectedness as a means for transcendence. I live and work in Los Angeles, CA.
As an interpretive artist, I am intrigued by geometric shapes, texture, sound, lines and atmosphere. I create high-chroma modern landscapes and text-based designs on paper and canvas that reference the intersection of the internal and external world, the familiar versus otherness, and themes of possible realities contrasted against fantasies. My work is informed by technology in that my prints are based on iPhone photographs of caves or digital finger sketches using art apps. This digital language is satisfying and explorative as it allows me to edit the journey to the finished image after unexpected visual plot twists and accidental perfections have occurred.
My ink paintings on canvas are pure play. Using various methods like tilting canvases on the floor or using a hair dryer to scatter paint, the work speaks to the dissonance between what could have been and what invariably is. By basing the work on a strong horizon line, the notion of traditional landscape is eclipsed by the need for the abstract. These monochromatic blacks and shades of gray are subtle, and is my refuge when my color story has been birthed in other work.
